Assignment Description: This first photography assignment was to learn about the Elements of Composition and apply them to our photos. We were challenged to shoot examples of The Rule of Thirds, Symmetry, Pattern, Texture, Depth of Field, Lines, Framing, Perspective, Space, Balance and Color.
The Rule of Thirds: In this photo, I moved the subject onto the left third line to follow the rule of thirds.
Symmetry: This picture uses symmetry because the right half of the photo is very similar to the left half of the photo.
Pattern: This photo is an example of pattern because the pattern of the bricks fills the frame and seems to go on forever.
Texture: This picture shows the variations in texture of the bark on this tree stump.
Depth of Field: This photo is an example of depth of field because the subject is in focus, while the foreground and background are out of focus.
Lines: This picture utilizes the shadows of the horizontal beams, which happen to be lines, to guide your eye to the subject.
Framing: In this photo, my classmate's camera was used as a frame for the subject.
Perspective: The perspective of this photo makes the small lion statue seem very large, while the life-sized human cast in the back seems very small in comparison.
Space: In this picture, the subject takes up very little of the frame and the rest is empty space, making the viewer intimate with the subject.
Balance: The bird bath on the left side is balanced by the ivy growing to the right of it.
Color: The reds and pinks in the flower along with the green behind the flower give the picture a sense of vibrancy and energy.
What I Learned: I learned that there is more to photography than just pointing and shooting. While looking for these different elements of composition when shooting, it is always good to include more than you want into your picture because you can always crop it out later. Also, I learned that lighting is very important; when I was indoors and had low lighting, the pictures turned out grainy compared to when I had lots of natural light outside.
